SUMMARY:Patriot Day
DESCRIPTION:Observe Patriot Day\nOn the direction of the President\, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans\, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11\, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities\, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks\, hold special church services or prayer meetings. People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them\, may lay flowers or visit memorials. \nPublic Life\nPatriot Day is not a federal holiday and schools and businesses do not close. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some people and organizations may take some time out to hold prayers for the victims of the attacks\, but these do not usually affect public life for more than a few minutes. \nAbout Patriot Day\nOn September 11\, 2001\, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers then deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings\, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused form the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks and the economic impact was immense. \nThe attacks have greatly increased attention to national security in the United States. This has had huge implications for United States national and international politics. This is particularly true for the relationships between the United States and Islamic countries in the Middle East. \nSymbols\nThe most potent symbol of the events that happened on September 11\, 2001 are pictures and videos of planes flying into buildings\, of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center engulfed in smoke and later collapsing and of people falling from buildings. Pictures taken of damaged buildings and relatives looking for loved ones in the days and weeks after the attacks are also often shown. The flag of the United States is often displayed around images of the events on September 11\, 2001. This is to remind Americans that their country remained strong in the face of massive terrorist attacks. \nPatriot Day should not be confused with Patriot’s Day\, also known as Patriots Day\, which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775\, which were two of the earliest battles in the American Revolutionary War.

SUMMARY:Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11\, for honoring military veterans\, that is\, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces (and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable).[1][2] It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918\, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations\, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954. \nVeterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day\, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans\, while Memorial Day honors those who had died while in military service.[3] Another military holiday that also occurs in May\, Armed Forces Day\, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. Additionally\, Women Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honors women who have served in the U.S. military.

SUMMARY:Marine Corps 245th Birthday
DESCRIPTION:Every year around the Marine Corps’ Nov. 10 birthday\, Marines around the world gather to celebrate the history and honor of the Corps while recognizing the young Marines who make up its future. \nParties rage from Las Vegas to San Diego to Okinawa\, Japan\, while more subdued celebrations are held by forward-deployed Marines in the Middle East. Everywhere\, a birthday cake is cut and the birthday message from the 13th Marine Corps Commandant Gen. John A. Lejeune is read. \n\nBut in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic the celebrations may face new restrictions\, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy Black warned Friday in a message posted on Facebook. \n“Marines\, Sailors\, and family members\, although several months away\, it is probable that many COVID-19 restrictions will still be in place come November 10\, 2020 limiting the size and scope of unit Birthday Ball Ceremonies\,” Black wrote in the message\, first reported by Task & Purpose.

SUMMARY:Patriot Day Video Salute
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Trust and its partners present a Patriot Day Salute video to remember those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks. \nThe video will also be aired at 10am on channel 23 and 1pm on channel 21 on 9/11. Other days/times can be found here at \nhttps://www.cvtv.org/schedule. \nNineteen years ago\, terrorists hijacked airplanes on September 11 to attack the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington\, D.C. Everyone on board the three planes and nearly 3\,000 people on the ground were killed. A fourth hijacked plane on way to an unknown destination crashed into a field near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania\, killing everyone aboard. We honor those who paid the ultimate price and acknowledge the people who suffer from the aftereffects of the events that unfolded that day. \nThank you to Presenting Sponsor Davidson & Associates Insurance. The Historic Trust is also grateful to its partners the Community Military Appreciation Committee and the City of Vancouver\, along with media sponsor The Columbian\, for making possible this virtual salute. The Trust and partners are grateful to the speakers\, musicians\, and other participants who generously cooperated in making the video. \n__________________________________________________\nObserve Patriot Day\nOn the direction of the President\, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans\, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. SUMMARY:National CPR/AED Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:In 2007\, the AHA in coalition with the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council worked collaboratively to designate a National CPR and AED Awareness Week federally. On December 13\, 2007\, Congress unanimously passed a resolution to set aside June 1-7 each year as National CPR and AED Awareness Week to spotlight how lives can be saved if more Americans know CPR and how to use an AED. Our campaign reinforces these skills but also places importance on the willingness of bystanders to act in a cardiac arrest emergency.

SUMMARY:Memorial Day Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:The Community Military Appreciation Committee (CMAC)\, the City of Vancouver and the National Parks Service will be hosting a special Memorial Day program at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday\, May 25. The program\, which is prepared in advance\, will feature remarks by Larry Smith and Mike Burton from CMAC\, Superintendent of the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Tracy Fortmann\, Mayor of Vancouver Anne McEnerny-Ogle and Meredith McMackin\, a Gold Star Mother. The keynote speaker for the event will be General Donna Prigmore of the Oregon National Guard. The program will be available to watch on CVTV cable channel 23/323HD and on cvtv.org. \nMusic for the broadcast program will be provided by the 204th Army Band\, Vancouver Fire Fighters Pipes and Drums\, the Vancouver Police Department and the VFW Post 7824 Honor Guard. \n“The coronavirus pandemic prevents us from gathering the year together as we normally would\, but consistent with guidance from national\, state and local public health authorities\, we are safely observing Memorial Day. By videotaping speakers’ remarks this year from different location\, we are responsibly doing our part for our community\, our healthcare heroes\, other front-line workers and first responders and those who are vulnerable\,” Tracy Fortmann said in a news release. \nCMAC co-chair Larry Smith said “the Memorial Day observance honors those who have given their lives for our country\, and although (it’s) not the public event and living history re-enactment we have enjoyed in the past\, we still have an opportunity to show our respect and support for the men and women of our armed forces.”\nCMAC is an all-inclusive group composed of members representing youth\, education\, civic\, military\, veterans groups\, and local governments. CMAC executes and plans community-wide events\, such as Memorial Day\, Veterans Day\, Our Community Salutes\, and POW/MIA Day ceremonies\, as well as recognition and support of military families of all services. \nAs soon as it’s available we will post a link here to the Memorial Day video.

SUMMARY:National Vietnam War Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL VIETNAM WAR VETERANS DAY \nNational Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 honors the men and women who served and sacrificed during the longest conflict in United States history. \nOn March 29\, 1973\, combat and combat support units withdrew from South Vietnam. Generations later\, Veterans of this time period are gaining the respect that was not so freely given upon their return. Involving five U.S. presidents\, crossing nearly two decades and 500\,000 U.S.military personnel\, it left an indelible mark on the American psyche. \nReturning veterans did not always receive respectful welcomes upon their arrival on American soil. Over 58\,000 killed\, never to return. The observance recognizes the military service of these men and women who answered the call to serve their country when she needed them. They didn’t make the decisions to go to war. \nThroughout the observance\, we recognize the service and duty rendered by all servicemen and women of this era. \nHOW TO OBSERVE #VietnamWarVeteransDay\nAround the country\, commemorative events\, speeches\, and luncheons are being held inviting Vietnam Veterans as honored guests. Other ways to participate include: \n\nThank a Vietnam Veteran.\nBuy them a drink or lunch.\nVisit a local memorial. Volunteer to help organize events.\nSupport a veteran’s organization in your community. Volunteer and offer your skills.\nWatch a Vietnam War documentary such as The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick or Last Days in Vietnam directed by Rory Kennedy or Vietnam Nurses by Timeline.\nRead about the Vietnam War in books like Vietnam – A History by Stanley Karnow or They Marched into Sunlight: War and Peace\, Vietnam and America\, October 1967 by David Maraniss or The Quiet American by Graham Green and Robert Stone.

SUMMARY:Patriot Day
DESCRIPTION:Observe Patriot Day                                                                  On the direction of the President\, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans\, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world.
