SUMMARY:Patriot Day Video Salute
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Trust and its partners present a Patriot Day Salute video to remember those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks. \nThe video will also be aired at 10am on channel 23 and 1pm on channel 21 on 9/11. Other days/times can be found here at \nhttps://www.cvtv.org/schedule. \nNineteen years ago\, terrorists hijacked airplanes on September 11 to attack the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington\, D.C. Everyone on board the three planes and nearly 3\,000 people on the ground were killed. A fourth hijacked plane on way to an unknown destination crashed into a field near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania\, killing everyone aboard. We honor those who paid the ultimate price and acknowledge the people who suffer from the aftereffects of the events that unfolded that day. \nThank you to Presenting Sponsor Davidson & Associates Insurance. The Historic Trust is also grateful to its partners the Community Military Appreciation Committee and the City of Vancouver\, along with media sponsor The Columbian\, for making possible this virtual salute. The Trust and partners are grateful to the speakers\, musicians\, and other participants who generously cooperated in making the video. \n__________________________________________________\nObserve Patriot Day\nOn the direction of the President\, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans\, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world. The flag should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11\, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities\, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks\, hold special church services or prayer meetings. People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them\, may lay flowers or visit memorials. \nPublic Life\nPatriot Day is not a federal holiday and schools and businesses do not close. Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some people and organizations may take some time out to hold prayers for the victims of the attacks\, but these do not usually affect public life for more than a few minutes. \nAbout Patriot Day\nOn September 11\, 2001\, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers then deliberately flew three of the planes into two important buildings\, the Pentagon in Washington DC and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York. The fourth crashed into a field near Shanksville\, Pennsylvania. The loss of life and damage that these hijackings caused form the biggest act of terrorism ever on United States soil. Nearly 3000 people died in the attacks and the economic impact was immense. \nThe attacks have greatly increased attention to national security in the United States. This has had huge implications for United States national and international politics. This is particularly true for the relationships between the United States and Islamic countries in the Middle East. \nSymbols\nThe most potent symbol of the events that happened on September 11\, 2001 are pictures and videos of planes flying into buildings\, of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center engulfed in smoke and later collapsing and of people falling from buildings. Pictures taken of damaged buildings and relatives looking for loved ones in the days and weeks after the attacks are also often shown. The flag of the United States is often displayed around images of the events on September 11\, 2001. This is to remind Americans that their country remained strong in the face of massive terrorist attacks. \nPatriot Day should not be confused with Patriot’s Day\, also known as Patriots Day\, which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775\, which were two of the earliest battles in the American Revolutionary War.

SUMMARY:National Vietnam War Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:NATIONAL VIETNAM WAR VETERANS DAY \nNational Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29 honors the men and women who served and sacrificed during the longest conflict in United States history. \nOn March 29\, 1973\, combat and combat support units withdrew from South Vietnam. Generations later\, Veterans of this time period are gaining the respect that was not so freely given upon their return. Involving five U.S. presidents\, crossing nearly two decades and 500\,000 U.S.military personnel\, it left an indelible mark on the American psyche. \nReturning veterans did not always receive respectful welcomes upon their arrival on American soil. Over 58\,000 killed\, never to return. The observance recognizes the military service of these men and women who answered the call to serve their country when she needed them. They didn’t make the decisions to go to war. \nThroughout the observance\, we recognize the service and duty rendered by all servicemen and women of this era. \nHOW TO OBSERVE #VietnamWarVeteransDay\nAround the country\, commemorative events\, speeches\, and luncheons are being held inviting Vietnam Veterans as honored guests. Other ways to participate include: \n\nThank a Vietnam Veteran.\nBuy them a drink or lunch.\nVisit a local memorial. Volunteer to help organize events.\nSupport a veteran’s organization in your community. Volunteer and offer your skills.\nWatch a Vietnam War documentary such as The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick or Last Days in Vietnam directed by Rory Kennedy or Vietnam Nurses by Timeline.\nRead about the Vietnam War in books like Vietnam – A History by Stanley Karnow or They Marched into Sunlight: War and Peace\, Vietnam and America\, October 1967 by David Maraniss or The Quiet American by Graham Green and Robert Stone.

SUMMARY:Military History Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Portland Metro Area Response Plan in World War II\nWhen the United States entered World War II\, it was the first time since the War of 1812 that the United States feared a full-scale enemy invasion. Across the country\, as military bases beefed up their security and war plans\, so did civilian governments. In Portland\, Oregon\, the city developed and implemented a comprehensive plan to combat enemy attacks\, as well as implementing the changes necessary at home to support the war effort abroad. These plans included the City of Vancouver. \nSpeakers: Mr. Paul Fanning
